#2 Seeded Bowling Bears Fall to Vandebilt Catholic in Semifinals
The Bowling Bears took an undefeated record into the state semifinals last Friday at All-Star Lanes against Vandebilt Catholic of Houma. An anticipated finals matchup against fellow Brothers of the Sacred Heart school Brother Martin was possible, but did not happen. The Bears fought hard, as they did all season, but fell a few pins short and lost in a tight 17-10 match. VC was the #1 seed in the West region with the Bears seeded #2 in the East region.
The 2016 season was a spectacular one for the bowling team, advancing to the semifinals in Division I and making a bid for their first Finals berth since 2007. Coach Robin Deck did a fantastic job of motivating the bowlers, making it fun for the bowlers and always seeming to find the right lineups in the tough matches. She led the Bears to an undefeated season until the semifinals and coached the state’s silver medalist in freshman Philip O’Neil in the singles championship. O’Neill bowled a 669 series for three games, just seven pins behind the gold medalist.
Deck also coached two District I, first team all-district bowlers in Austin Bertrand, 206 average, and Christian Gendron, 188 average. Two Catholic bowlers also garnered second team all-district honors in Philip O’Neill, with a 183 average, and Daniel Heltz with an average of 177.
