The CHS student body, faculty and staff gathered this morning in the gym to celebrate the 196th anniversary of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart with a Foundation Day Mass. Today’s celebrant was Catholic High’s own Brother Ray Hebert, SC.

On Sept. 30, 1821, in a small chapel in Lyon, France, Father André Coindre founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Ten young men made private vows for the love of God and of young people. Their chief mission was the moral, intellectual and religious development of young orphan boys. The work begun by Father Coindre later spread into a large movement that is now active in more than 30 countries.

“Foundation Day is similar to a wedding anniversary for us brothers,” said Brother Malcolm Melcher, SC. “Like in a marriage, we make a lifetime commitment to the Brotherhood – for better or for worse, we stay committed to the vows we’ve made.”

Also recognized at Mass were the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for the 2017-2018 school year. Those students are:
