Ian Thompson Selected To Attend HLCA At NASA Space And Rocket Center

CHS junior Ian Thompson was selected to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy at the NASA Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Sixty students from 40 different countries were selected to attend. Of those 60 participants, only 20 represent the United States Ð Thompson is the only representative of Louisiana.

The Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA) provides students 16 Ð 18 years old with a unique opportunity exclusive to children of full-time Honeywell employees to build and hone their leadership skills by tackling real-world challenges in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Along with meeting strict academic requirements to apply for this highly competitive program, applicants also had to write an essay explaining their STEM career intentions.

HLCA introduces students to the legacy of the American Space Program and concentrates on addressing current issues within the science and technology community. Working in small groups, the students are presented with challenges and are encouraged to explore problem-solving scenarios using hands-on science, mathematics and engineering skills. Many of the activities require students to present their findings or opinions to a panel of experts in the field.
