Baseball Bears Win District Championship – AGAIN!

The Baseball Bears added another district championship to its program’s resume’ with a pair of wins over McKinley this week. The Bears defeated the Panthers by 13-1 scores on both Tuesday and Thursday. This is the fourth 5-5A title in a row and the twenty-third for the program since 1980.

On Tuesday, the Bears pounded out eleven hits with no strikeouts in the 13-1 win. The team started out slow, leading just 6-1 through four innings before a seven run outburst in the fifth busted the game wide open. Will Ethridge had three hits for the Bears and Patrick Crifasi clubbed a pair of triples. Bryan Bergeron had two RBIs for CHS.

On the mound, Landon Boeneke improved his record to 1-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.62 on the season. Boeneke went three innings for the win, striking out four Panther batters. Brock Perry and Austin Andrishok each tossed an inning to close the five inning run rule game.

On Thursday, 10 seniors were honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities. Max Wagner went three innings and struck out three to get the win and move his record to 2-1 on the season. Sam Prescott threw the final two innings of relief with one strikeout.

Offensively, the Bears were recipients of seven errors, seven walks and three hit batters. The mistakes, coupled with eleven stolen bases and a 2-3 performance by Will Ethridge, catapulted CHS to victory.

The 25-7 Bears close out the regular season on the road Saturday, April 22, at Hahnville. The Tigers are 23-9 on the season and wrapped up district play with a 10-2 record, good enough for second place in 7-5A. Hahnville has three college bound players and should secure a top eight seed when the 5A playoff brackets are released on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears appeared to have wrapped up a two seed for the Division I playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Bears will likely return to action on Friday, May 5th, in quarterfinal play in a best-of-three series at Grizzly Field.
