Baseball Team Rallied for Win Against St. Amant

The Bears followed up an impressive 8-2 win over Dutchtown on Tuesday with an exciting 3-2 victory over St. Amant last night. The win puts the Bears in 1st place in the District 3-5A standings. As expected with any match up between the Bears and the Gators, the game went down to the wire.

The Bears put the first runs up in the contest in the first inning. R. Lewis (soph.) ripped a ball to left field and ended up with a triple. K. David (Sr.) singled him home, and C.H.S was on top 1-0. The Gators generated a run in the 5th inning and the game remained tied 1-1 until the 7th.

The 7th inning was outstanding!!!! With two outs, pitcher M. Billings (Sr.) struck out the batter and it appeared that the inning was over. A passed ball on the final strike allowed the batter to move to 1st and a runner from 3rd base to score. The controversial play left runners on the bases and the Gators up by one. The next batter came through with a double and the Gators tried to bring the runner on first home to score. C. Deno (Sr.) fielded the ball and relayed it to A. Nola (Soph.); Nola threw to catcher B. Vincent and the senior made the successful tag out at the plate. The Bears were down one going into the bottom of the 7th.

In the bottom of the 7th, the offenses came through in the clutch. Deno lead off the inning with a base hit. B. Landry (Sr.) bunted him over and the team had the tying run in scoring position. The Gators walked the next two batters and the bases were loaded with one out.
A shallow fly out for the Bears sent senior M. Billings to the plate with two outs. The team’s leader sent a scorching single past the 3rd baseman that drove in Deno and S. Dauterive (Sr.) and gave the Bears the win 3-2.

Billings also provided the defensive leadership. He pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on 5 hits.

The next action will take place against Woodlawn this Saturday at Woodlawn. The J.V. action will start at 10:00 and the Varsity will follow.
