Basketball Bears Prepare for 2015-2016 Season

With basketball season just around the corner, the 2015-2016 squad has been busy going through the paces, preparing for the opener under third year coach Mark Cascio.  Cascio, a graduate of the Class of 2003, returns seven seniors in their quest to defend their District 5-5A title.  Those seven seniors, along with an extremely large junior class of ten roundballers, will look to improve on the 21-8 record set by last year’s team.

Toliver Freeman, Ethan Treigle, Sam Cancienne, DeMarcus Shepherd, Grant Sceroler, Brandon Ruth and John Ward are the veteran Bears on the roster.

“I really like our depth with our seven seniors, and many juniors will contribute to our team this year.  We have enough returning experience from last year’s team, which shot the ball extremely well, to make a district title run in the 2015-2016 season.  We have a very dynamic roster that has worked hard at improving its communication on the floor and being great teammates on and off the floor.  With this being my third year, our guys understand the staff’s expectations.  We hope that program consistency will give us an advantage against our opponents,” said Cascio on the season.

Cascio, 38-23 in his two seasons at Catholic, sports a four member staff.  Ben Relle and CHS alums Jay Butcher, Chris Kwan and Taylor Trepagnier, provide tremendous leadership and direction to complement Cascio.  Butcher and Kwan are former Bear players.

The 5-5A slate is a competitive one, with McKinley and Broadmoor being the representatives in the playoffs from the district last season.  St. Amant, East Ascension and Dutchtown are talented and well-coached programs and present tough atmospheres on the road.  Jesuit is a perennial power and the Blue Jays come to the Bear Cave for the season opener.  Another Catholic League program, Rummel, is on the schedule and will host CHS in January.  4A power Plaquemine is on the docket in December and will travel to Catholic.

The Bears travel to Brusly on Tuesday, November 3, for a JV/Varsity doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.  On November 5, the Bears will host Tara at 8 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Game.  The final scrimmage will be at home versus Scotlandville in a JV/Varsity format at 5:30 p.m. on November 10.
Jamboree action begins on November 11 at Zachary.  Tipoff for the freshmen is at 5 p.m., with the JV and Varsity to follow.

The season opener is against traditional 5A New Orleans power, Jesuit.  The Blue Jays will make the trek up I-10 on Tuesday, November 17 with the JV getting underway at 5:30 p.m.  The Varsity follows 15 minutes after the final buzzer.
