Basketball Bears Win Red Stick Classic Tourney
Head Basketball Coach Mark Cascio knew going into the Christmas break his team would be challenged in the prestigious Holiday Classic and Red Stick Classic tournaments. The Bears lost to Scotlandville in the third place game at Country Day prior to Christmas.
After Christmas, the Bears went to work in the Bear Cave, defeating an improving Family Christian team in the opening round of the Red Stick Classic. That win was followed by a victory over last year’s Division IV Runners-up, Jehoveh-Jireh, in the semifinals. In the championship game, the Bears squared off against last year’s Division II State Champion, De La Salle. At the end of the third quarter, the Bears led the Cavaliers by a narrow margin of 34-33. But Cascio and his staff handed out some fourth quarter magic, outscoring DLS 17-8 down the stretch for a 51-41 win. “Winning the Red Stick Classic on our home court is great for our guys,” said Cascio.
Kentrell Garnett led the Bears with 14 points against De La Salle. Collin Holloway tossed in 13 points while Hunter Williams added nine and Nick Judice chipped in eight for CHS.
“Winning the tournament was a fitting way to cap off a holiday break where we went 5-2 against tough competition. We learned a lot about ourselves in the last two weeks, and knowing your identity as we get ready for district play is a huge advantage,” added Cascio.
Catholic improved its record to 13-4 with the 3-0 Red Stick sweep, and will face Denham Springs Friday, Jan. 5. Tip off is for 7:15 in the CHS gym.
