Bears Finish In Top Five In Division I State Championship

The Catholic High School golf team shot a two day total of 615, good enough for a fifth place finish at the Division I State Championship. The event was held at The Wetlands in Lafayette. The Bears shot a 310 on Monday, putting them fifth of the eight teams that qualified for the state championship tournament. While Byrd distanced themselves from the field with a 287, the Bears were in a tight race with the rest of the field on Tuesday. The Bears’ 305 second day round was better, but the other teams improved as well. Catholic finished just thirteen strokes behind runner-up Jesuit.

Junior Carson Caruso shot a 75-74 two day total of 149 which tied him for seventh place overall. Sophomore Johnathan Ellis tied for 15th with a 154. Senior Nick Ashy also fired a 154 in his final high school match. Rounding out the roster were juniors Brayden Seguin and Will Perilloux carding a 161 and a 165, respectively.

The Bears made huge strides throughout the 2018 season. Along the way, CHS captured Metro, District, and Regional Championships prior to their appearance at the Division I State Tournament. Coach Pat Dulaney was proud of the progress the team made. “I am proud of the boys for the improvements they have made this year. We start the golf season in early February and it is rewarding to see their growth on the course and off the course, as well. I appreciate the commitment they made to the golf program, Catholic High, and their brothers on the team, said Dulaney.  “We will miss our two seniors, Nick Ashy and Patrick Charpentier. Nick was our team captain this season and has been a three year letterman for our program. His leadership will be missed. We were happy with the addition of Patrick to our team for the first time in his senior season. His support of his teammates will be missed,” added Dulaney. The future is bright for the Bears, as they lose just two seniors and return four of their starting tournament team members.
