Catholic High School Announces David Simoneaux, Jr. as the 21st Head Coach of the CHS Football Program

BATON ROUGE, LA – MARCH 8, 2021 – Catholic High School announces the hiring of David Simoneaux, Jr as the new Head Coach of the school’s football program. Principal Lisa Harvey says she is thrilled about Simoneaux’s hire and looks forward to the energy and experience he will bring to the school’s athletic program.

“When we hire a coach, we not only look for him to have the ability to perform on the field, the individual must also have the ability to work in the classroom with our students,” Harvey says.  “Coach Simoneaux exudes all of the traits we look for in a leader and teacher of our students. I am confident he will maintain our tradition of excellence – both in athletics and academics – while also helping to instill Gospel values according to Catholic tradition and the spirit of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.”

Simoneaux says he is eager to take on his new role.

“I’m honored and humbled to become a part of this incredible school community,” Simoneaux says. “I’m looking forward to honoring the tradition here and continuing to elevate the legacy of the school’s thriving football program.”

Simoneaux has spent the last six seasons as the head football coach at Catholic High School Pointe Coupee, where in 2019, he led the Hornets to the State Championship game. He was named the Class 1A Louisiana High School Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association and four-time District Head Coach of the Year. Before his time in Pointe Coupee, he was on the staff of the Central Wildcats and formerly his alma mater, Parkview Baptist School. His career record is 49-21. Simoneaux played for Parkview Baptist and was a crucial part of leading the team to the 2001 3A State Championship, the first in school history.

CHS Athletic Director J.P. Kelly ’92 on the process to replace former Head Coach Gabe Fertitta, who left the program in February to take a position on the Louisville Cardinals Football Staff:

“We received more than 100 applications from across the United States for the job. Among his football and sports peers in Louisiana and across the south, Simoneaux was our guy,” Kelly explains. “Coach Simoneaux is known for his incredible ability to get the most out of his players and fellow coaches. We knew it was not going to be easy to replace Coach Fertitta, but Coach Simoneaux is going to be the perfect individual to lead our program going forward.”

Catholic High School football is entering its 93rd football season and has captured the Division 1 State Championship in 2015, 2017, and 2020. For more information, contact CHS Director of Communications Ashley Davies at adavies@catholichigh.org
