CHS Students Live-Out A Spirit Of Compassion

Recently, 22 CHS students participated in the 4th Annual U.S. Province Mission in Houma, LA. There were 137 total students, a mix of boys and girls, from all nine U.S. Province schools (CHS, Brother Martin, E.D. White, St. Stanislaus, Bishop Guertin, Monsignor McClancy, Mount St. Charles and St. Joseph of Metuchen, NJ). The week began with a welcome dinner and mass celebrated by Br. Carl Evans. During the week, students balanced work, prayer and cultural experiences. For the work, students were mostly on properties owned by the Houmas Tribe, with projects coordinated by Br. John Hotstream. Chief Thomas Dardar and his wife Noreen, spent time with the students at the work-sites and at school in the evening. The students also met and learned from many other prominent citizens of United Houma Nation.

Each night concluded with prayer led by students from schools paired together. CHS students combined with those from Bishop Guertin and contributed our traditional closing song, We Will Rise Again. The prayers focused on the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, building community and compassion for the less fortunate.

The cultural experiences included touring the Louisiana marshes on Houmas boats, going to Lumcon (a costal research facility) and visiting an alligator farm in Gibson, just to name a few. The week concluded with a traditional Houmas pow-wow at Vandebilt High School, learning traditional Houmas games like stickball and archery, weaving crafts, and eating boiled shrimp and Native American tacos.

The CHS participants were Reid Babin, Ross DeNicola, Elliot Fontenot, Garrett Gamble, Stephen Herin, Patrick Herry, Steele Jones, Jacob Kimball, Wil Landry, Parker LeBlanc, Mason McClatchey, Andy Mertz, Jake Netterville, Sam Parker, Daniel Peeler, Stewart Roeling, Jared Sapia, Conner Silva, Jacob Simon, Grant Telhiard, Alex Tilley, and Philip Tullier. Chaperones were Mr. Chris Davis, Ms. Nancy Herin, Mr. Scott Losavio, and Mr. Willie Stephenson.
