CHS Students Take First At AICS Competition

Six CHS juniors placed first against nine other schools in the AICS (Analysis and Investigation of Cyber Scenarios) competition at Louisiana Tech during the week of June 17-22. The team faced strong competition from local high schools, including West Feliciana and Dunham, as well as Ruston High and West Monroe in northern Louisiana. Team members included Brennan Campesi, Stephen Herin, Thomas Hodgson, James Lauve, Jacob LeBlanc and Benjamin Mayeux. Faculty members were Tim Chustz and Sheri Schoonmaker.

Students spent the week immersed in the role of federal agents tasked with solving four cyber scenarios. Once the scenario was introduced, information was distributed in real-time to simulate the decisions agents must make while sifting through large amounts of emails, classified documents and background information. Information gathered was constantly changing. They had to be careful not to go down “rabbit holes” of purposefully false information. Students learned to match up IP addresses, crack passwords on websites through penetration testing and modify elements on a web page to access needed information. Finally, they presented their findings to a panel of judges, documenting who was responsible for the incident, how the event was set up, and recommended action to be taken against the guilty party.

AICS is a week-long, catalytic event for engaging high school juniors in the world of cyber through analysis and investigation. AICS is driven by a scenario-based approach to security issues that incorporate hands-on engineering and computer science labs, cryptography, film sessions and a final cyber challenge. In addition, it integrates the history, ethical issues, applications and theory behind the development of analysis and synthesis of information in the context of threat assessment to critical systems. AICS was developed by Louisiana Tech University in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.
