CHS vs. Brother Martin: Battle for the “Coindre Cup”

The Bears will face off against fellow Brothers of the Sacred Heart school Brother Martin in a Division I quarterfinal playoff game on Friday, November 20.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at City Park’s Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. 

Both schools were founded by the Brothers and have met once in school history. Catholic High faculty members are calling the contest a battle for the “Coindre Cup” named for Father Andre Coindre, the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. 

Catholic High, 7-3
Brother Martin, 8-2

Catholic High shared the co-district championship in 5-5A.
Brother Martin finished tied for second with John Curtis in New Orleans’ Catholic League; Rummel was the district champion.

Brother Martin defeated Catholic 25-23 in the Division I quarterfinals last year at Memorial Stadium.  Catholic’s two point conversion attempt to tie on the last play of the game came up just short.

Catholic has defeated Sam Houston, St. Thomas More, Teurlings Catholic, East Ascension, Broadmoor, St. Amant and McKinley.  The Bears lost to Parkview Baptist, Zachary and Dutchtown.
Brother Martin has defeated Plaquemine, St. Stanislaus, Karr, John Curtis, Sulphur, Holy Cross, Shaw and Jesuit.  The Crusaders have fallen to St. Augustine and Rummel.

Catholic – RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed 127 times for 1,212 yards and 12 TDs; 38 receptions for 530 yards and 4 TDs; Edwards-Helaire has 102 points scored this season. QB Ian Brian completed 128 passes on 205 attempts for 1,478 yards and 14 TDs. The Bears have given up 195 points this season. 

Brother Martin – RB Bruce Jordan-Swilling is the 6th leading rusher in the state with 1,884 yards and 30 TDs; 186 points scored this season. QB Jake Broggi has tossed for over 2,300 yards and 23 TDs. WR Jeremy Singleton averages almost 20 yards a reception on 45 catches and has 13 TDs.
The Crusaders have yielded a whopping 351 points in 2015.

Brother Martin – Mark Bonis in year 7sevenas head of the Crusaders.

Catholic – All three coordinators for the Bears – defensive coordinator Matt Burmaster (Jesuit), offensive coordinator Gabe Fertitta (Holy Cross),and special teams coordinator Eric Held (Brother Martin) are former players in the Catholic League.

Brother Martin – Junior RB Bruce Jordan-Swilling and junior CB Tre Swilling are sons of former New Orleans Saints linebacking great Pat Swilling.
