Football Bears Advance to Quarterfinals with 44-0 Victory over Archbishop Shaw

The Catholic High Bears opened their 2017 playoff run with a convincing 44-0 victory over Archbishop Shaw from the metro New Orleans area. The Bears were dominant in all three phases and hit the Eagles with a flurry of punches in the second quarter to make their playoff presence known.

The defense held Shaw to two yards of total offense, the special teams produced a touchdown, and the first team offense averaged close to six yards per play to help the Bears to a 8-3 record. Shaw slipped to 0-11 on the year.

The Bears advance to the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs and will face another Catholic League team in the St. Augustine Purple Knights. The Purple Knights enter Friday night’s game with a 7-3 record and are coming off a 27-0 victory over Jesuit in the first round of the playoffs. The Knights were aided by five Jesuit interceptions after a closely contested three quarters of football.

The Knights have signature wins against McDonogh 35, Brother Martin and Archbishop Rummel.  They have lost to John Curtis, De La Salle and Holy Cross.

The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. at Olympia Stadium on Friday night.  The winner will advance to face the Evangel-Rummel game victor.
