Junior Classical League Attends State Convention
Thirty current students at Catholic High, as well as eight alumni attended the annual State Junior Classical League Convention at the Holiday Inn South in Baton Rouge from Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8. The club members participated and placed in many events from tests to athletics even to Certamen, also known as Latin quiz bowl. The Bears took home 4th place in overall sweepstakes.
Catholic had three seniors serve as state officers this past year: Drew Alvarez as President, Connor Doucet as 1st Vice President and Joey Balhoff as Historian. Two more CHS students were elected this weekend: Junior Joseph Sotile as the State Technology Coordinator and Sophomore Jacob Summerville as State Editor.
Gerard Fontenelle í´12 was elected as vice president of the Louisiana Senior Classical League, the college version of JCL. Kurt Ristroph í´12 serves as the president of the National Senior Classical League as well as Certamen Chair for the State Convention.
As a club, Catholic High placed 2nd in the club website contest, 3rd in publicity, 3rd in overall spirit and 4th in the banner contest. Also, Seniors Dillon Morris and Drew Alvarez participated in the talent competition at convention, but did not place.
In memory of Greg Sollie, Dillon Morris also built a 6-foot by 8-foot catapult that was dedicated to the recently passed teacher when it was fired across Broadmore High Schoolí´s football field at the athletic competition section of convention known as Olympika.
