Alumnus Mark Beard ’79 Ordained Deacon
Seminarian Mark Beard, CHS Class of 1979, was ordained a deacon June 21 at St. Joseph Cathedral.
Priests, deacons, family members and friends filled the cathedral during the rite of Ordination to the Order of the Diaconate. The diaconate is one of three levels of holy orders; the others are presbyterate (priests) and episcopacy (bishops).
Deacons proclaim and preach the gospel, baptize, witness wedding vows, perform funeral rights, lead prayers and assist at the altar.
As part of their continued formation before being ordained to the priesthood, deacons must serve at least six months in a parish in the diocese under the tutelage of a pastor. Beard will serve at St. Thomas More Church in Baton Rouge with Father Tom Duhe.
Beard holds a BS in business management and an MBA for LSU.
