Baseball Bears Go 2-1 In Weekend Atchafalaya Challenge

The baseball Bears won two of three games this weekend in the Atchafalaya Challenge to run its record to 9-5 on the season. The Bears dropped the first game of the Challenge to Acadiana, 7-3, but finished the weekend strong with wins over New Iberia 6-3, and Notre Dame of Crowley, 3-2. The Bears have won five of their last six games.

In the Thursday night game, the Bears couldn’t find enough offense in the loss against Acadiana. Brock Perry (0-2) threw six innings in the loss, scattering six hits and striking out five. Will Ethridge was 2-3 at the plate with a rbi.

On Friday, the Bears bounced back with a 6-3 win versus New Iberia. Parker Evans improved his record to 2-1 on the mound with the win. Evans tossed four innings and struck out five. Max Wagner went two and two-thirds in relief of Evans and Sam Prescott closed for his first save of the season. Prescott threw one pitch for the save. Brennan Lambert was 2-4 with three rbi at the plate.

In what would be the Saturday finale, CHS bested the Pioneers of Notre Dame in a tight 3-2 ballgame. Brady Hebert (2-0) went six innings and yielded eight hits while sitting down five Pio hitters. Grant Segar recorded his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Cole Johnson was 2-3 with a rbi to lead CHS on offense.

The evening game between the Bears and St. Thomas More was rained out.

The Bears are looking at a meat grinder schedule-wise this week with some of the top programs in the state on the ledger. The Bears will face Teurlings Catholic on Tuesday and Saturday; Opelousas Catholic on Thursday; St. Thomas More on Friday; and Parkview Baptist on Saturday. “We are looking forward to playing four excellent programs in the coming week,” commented head coach Brad Bass. “All four teams will compete for a state championship in their divisions in May. We invite great competition each season and schedule tough games during the pre-district to prepare us for district and he playoffs.”

The Bears will play Teurlings for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, on the campus of LSU-Eunice.
