Baseball Bears Go 2-2 In Weekend Tournament

The weekend tournament road trip to the Lake Charles area got off to a slow start, as the baseball Bears dropped a 10-5 decision to Barbe on Thursday and lost 8-3 to Sam Houston on Friday. The Bears received strong mound work from Brock Perry and Brock Miller, combining to give up zero earned runs versus the national power Barbe Bucs. Against Sam Houston, Parker Evans and Nathan Bell combined to yield just three hits in their team’s loss. CHS committed 11 errors in the first two games of the tournament.

Saturday was a different story for the Bears, as CHS made just one error in its wins over Lafayette, 5-1, and Sulphur, 4-1. Grant Segar tossed a complete game to pick up the win over Lafayette. Peyton Alexander had two hits and Jordan Werner drove in two to pace CHS at the plate. In game four of the tourney, Brady Hebert picked up the win and Max Wagner the save against Sulphur. Alexander and Will Ethridge each had a hit for the Bears and drove in key runs with the sticks.

“Saturday was more representative of how we expect to play baseball,” said head coach Brad Bass. “We pitched well enough to beat Barbe and Sam Houston, but we kicked it around a little. On Saturday, we played great baseball against two top ten programs and came out on the winning side. When we put it all together, we are a dangerous ballclub.”

CHS returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 7, a 6:30 p.m. when the Bears face Central. The Wildcats sport LSU signee Mikhail Hilliard on the mound and ULL signee Blake Jones behind the plate.
