Baseball Bears Move To 4-1
The CHS baseball team entered the weekend with a 2-1 record after splitting games in Thursday’s action. Head coach Brad Bass was intent on keeping his team focused and playing loose as it faced the talent-laden Ouachita Christian Eagles on Friday and 5A Walker on Saturday. Bass’ wishes were answered with a 27-9 barnburner over Ouachita Christian and a 9-2 victory over Walker.
In Friday’s game, the Bears surrendered eight runs in the top of the first to the 1A Eagles, but answered the onslaught with a barrage of their own, scoring thirteen runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bears kept the pressure on and scored ten runs in the bottom of the fourth to complete the rout of the visitors from Ouachita Parish. Junior Max Wagner (1-0) picked up his first career win over the Eagles.
On Saturday, the 3-1 Bears got going early against the Wildcats with sophomore Nathan Bell (1-1) registering his first career mound victory.
The Bears take to the diamond on Tuesday, March 1, with a match on the road against crosstown 4A rival St.Michael. The Warriors are 1-3, and were ranked in the top 5 in the pre-season LBCA poll. The Warriors three losses are against 5A opponents Comeaux, nationally ranked Sulphur and Sam Houston. Their lone win came against top 5 ranked Tioga, a 4A club.
The Bears will send senior Brian Fairbanks to the hill to face the Warriors. Fairbanks is 1-0 on the season and picked up the win against St. Michael as a sophomore in 2014. Leading the way at the plate for the Bears is shortstop Josh Smith who is hitting .667 with four home runs through five games.
First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at St. Michael.
