Baseball Bears Split In Tough Tourney
This past weekend, the CHS baseball team embarked on their toughest pre-district road trip of the season when they headed to the Lake Charles for the Southwest Louisiana Tournament. The Bears faced 2A state power Notre Dame-Crowley, 5A power Sam Houston, nationally ranked Sulphur of 5A and last year’s 5A state champion and national power Barbe.
The Bears split the weekend, starting with a 6-0 win against Notre Dame on Thursday and finishing with a win over the state’s #1 team in Class 5A, Barbe, 6-4. The wins were sandwiched around Friday night’s 12-11 heartbreaking loss to Sam Houston and a Saturday afternoon loss to Sulphur, 15-5.
Parker Evans was the winning pitcher versus Notre Dame, while Grant Segar tossed a seven inning gem in relief to record the win versus Barbe. Brady Sartain took the loss against Sulphur, while Nathan Bell was the losing pitcher against Sam Houston.
On the offensive side for the Bears, Brandon Fairbanks went 5 for 7 with two doubles, Brennan Lambert was 2 for 5 with a double and Will Ethridge was also 2 for 5 with four RBI.
Coach Brad Bass was proud of how the Bears competed, “We find out a little more about ourselves each week, especially going on the road to face these caliber programs. I am proud of our guys for fighting back and showing resilience to defeat nationally renowned Barbe.”
The Bears’ record now stands at 6-4, as they return to Grizzly Field on Tuesday, March 8, with a showdown with 8-2 Central. The Wildcats showcase junior right-hander Mi’Khail Hilliard, a recent commitment to LSU. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
