Baseball Wraps up Successful Season
The 2015 Catholic High baseball team had a magical season this spring that featured a laundry list of accomplishments.
The Bears finished 37-4 and set a school record for wins in a single season. The team won their second consecutive district championship by winning nine games in a row after a district opening loss.
The Bears placed an astounding NINE members on the 1st team for District 5-5A’s All-District team – Ross Massey P, Brian Fairbanks P, Cole Johnson C, Matt Crapanzano INF, Josh Smith INF, Hayden Mixon INF, Bo Branch UTIL, Chuck Soileau UTIL, and Simon Prevot OF.
2nd team all-district members were Will Hopkins P, Nick Deranger P, Austin Andrishok P, Connor Bowen OF.
An Honorable Mention all-district selection was Kyle Candilora P.
The squad also had the district’s Most Valuable Player in Ross Massey, the Gold Glove winner in Josh Smith, and the Coach of the Year in Brad Bass.
Three Bears recently signed national letters of intent to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level in Ross Massey (Tulane) and Hayden Mixon and Simon Prevot (both to LSU-Eunice).

The Student-Athlete Clyde Didier Award winners were Matt Crapanzano, Ross Massey, and Ryan McGovern, all sporting grade point averages of 4.0.

Gold Glove Award – Bo Branch
Two baseball Bears, Bradley Thornton and Ryan McGovern, were awarded with the prestigious Man of the Year designations at the Honors Convocation. Thornton also captured a Golden Bear Award for his prowess in Art.
Ross Massey was awarded with the Athlete of the Year award for the Class of 2015.
The Bears tossed a school record FOUR no-hitters during the 2015 season.
Ross Massey no hit Slidell on opening day, Brian Fairbanks no hit Dutchtown, Nick Deranger and Austin Andrishok combined to no hit Woodlawn, and Deranger tossed a perfect game against McKinley.
The Bears advanced to the Class 5A state tournament in Sulphur, Louisiana and defeated Brother Martin in the semifinals. Ross Massey shutout Brother Martin hitters for seven hitters, while Brandon Fairbanks and Bo Branch provided offensive heroics in the bottom of the seventh. Fairbanks led off the inning with a pinch hit double and Branch drove him in with a single down the left field line to advance to the championship game.
In the finals, the Bears came up just short to defending national champion Barbe High School, 6-1.
Fourth year head coach Brad Bass was choked up speaking about his club – “I love this baseball team. I am so proud of what they were able to accomplish this year, Our thirteen seniors provided such great leadership and are excellent role models for the younger players. I will miss them”.
Those thirteen seniors are Greg Whalen, Mason Rodriguez, Bradley Thornton, Will Hopkins, Ryan McGovern, Ross Massey, Matt Crapanzano, Bo Branch, Hayden Mixon, Simon Prevot, Chuck Soileau, Kyle Candilora, and Nick Deranger.
Congratulations to the Bears on a memorable season, one that will never be forgotten thanks to the outstanding performance of the players, the senior leadership and the guidance of Brad Bass and his coaching staff.
