Basketball Bears Open District Play Against East Ascension

The Basketball Bears open 5-5A play against the visiting East Ascension Spartans on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7:15 p.m. at CHS. The Spartans enter the game with a 19-4 record and signature pre-district wins against Plaquemine, Belaire, Barbe, Holy Cross and a Hall of Fame game victory over Ellender. The Spartans played competitively in losses to state powers University Lab and Riverside Academy.

Coach Mark Cascio’s hoopsters come in with a 15-5 record.  Toliver Freeman leads the Bears with 18.1 points per game and fellow senior, Ethan Treigle, is second at 8.4 points per game.  Freeman (5.2) and Treigle (3.2) pace the team in the rebounds category while another senior, DeMarcus Shepherd, leads the team with 15 blocked shots for the season.

When asked about tonight’s 5-5A opener, Cascio commented, “We must control the pace and win the rebounding battle to beat the Spartans. When the time comes to make a big play, we cannot pass it up.  EA is too good for us to miss out on opportunities that come our way.”

The Bears have defeated notable programs such as Jesuit, Thibodaux, De La Salle, John Curtis, Rummel and Zachary in non-district competition.
