Basketball Bears To Play Final Regular Season Game Against McKinley
The CHS basketball team registered a 53-35 road win over 5-5A opponent Dutchtown on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The Bears raced out to a 30-13 first half lead and thwarted a Dutchtown rally in the third quarter. Despite the charge by the home standing Griffins, the Bears’ lead never dipped under double digits. Seniors Toliver Freeman (14) and Demarcus Shepherd (12) led the Bears in scoring.
“It was good to go on the road and get a district win. Dutchtown fought back after being down by seventeen at half. But our guys answered every run by Dutchtown in the third quarter. It was a total team effort as we played a number of guys in the win,” said head basketball coach Mark Cascio.
The Bears will play their last regular season game on Friday, Feb. 17 at home. Tipoff for Senior Night will be shortly after 7:15 p.m. after the recognition of the senior hoopsters and their parents. The game is also Silent Night, where Bear fans are asked to be “silent” until the team scores eight points. When the Bears hit eight points, fans are asked to make as much noise as possible.
“McKinley is 9-0 in district and just clinched a 5-5A championship on Tuesday against East Ascension. The Panthers have excellent guard play and Nick Wiggins, a 6’3 football signee with UL-Lafayette, is a force underneath,” said Cascio. “Last time against McKinley, we missed easy scoring opportunities which put us in a hole early. We missed easy opportunities late which prevented us from taking the lead in a hostile environment. The entire fourth quarter was a one possession game before losing by seven. We must have better offensive output this game while continuing to play with great defensive effort to defeat the Panthers”.
The Bears will learn their playoff fate on Monday, Feb. 22 when the LHSAA releases the brackets for the 5A playoffs. CHS is currently #24 in the unofficial power ratings at www.kenramsey.com.
