Basketball Bears Win District!

The road to winning a district championship was not the initial path the Bears chose when opening 5-5A play. The basketball Bears dropped its opener to St. Amant, but then rattled off four straight wins, including its 60-52 triumph last Friday over Broadmoor to win the district title.

Broadmoor came into the game as the #32 rated team in the Class 5A power ratings, and needed a win to better its chances of making the post-season. The Buccaneers looked motivated as they challenged the Bears and entered the fourth quarter down by one, 37-36. But the Bears had other plans, pulling away for an eight point win. Nick Judice led the Bears with 15 points.

The Bears finished district competition with a 4-1 record and 18-7 overall. Going into this weekend’s district tournament, the Bears sit at #3 in the Division I power ratings with just Scotlandville and St. Paul’s sitting ahead. Multiple wins in the 5-5A tournament would strengthen Catholic’s chances of remaining as the #3 seed for the Division I playoffs. Pairings for the LHSAA playoffs will be released on Monday, February 19, at noon.
