Bears Bring home LHSAA Division 1 Swimming State Championship

The CHS Swim Team won its 2nd consecutive LHSAA Division 1 State Championship on Saturday November 21 at the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana in Shreveport. This is the 7th state championship for the Bears in 10 years (’11,’13,’14,’15,’16,’19) and the 8th overall for the program (2005). The Bears dominated the competition by winning 6 out of 11 events contested, including all 3 relays.

Three different swimmers won events for the Bears (Mitchell Gillem, Garrett Accardo, Will Cooper), with Gillem being named Most Outstanding Performer of the Division 1 meet. He was the champion in the 50 free and his time is an All-American Consideration time (20.74).

The Bears achieved two other All-American consideration times in the 200 free relay (1:25.37: Garrett Accardo, Gillem, Joseph Duncan, William DeJean) and 400 free relay (3:08.64 Accardo, Gillem, Will Cooper, DeJean).

In addition, the time of 3:08.64 in the 400 Free Relay is an LHSAA Division 1 and LHSAA Composite state record. The Bears bested the performance of the 2013 CHS Bears (3:09.22: Bone, Seagraves, Rodriguez, B. Grenfell).

200 Free: 2nd place Will Cooper, 3rd place William DeJean, 11th place Parker St. Romain

200 IM: 3rd place William Kitto, 4th Joseph Duncan, 9th place Sean Melancon, 16th place Alex Cooper

50 Free: 1st place Mitchell Gillem*, 2nd place Garrett Accardo, 11th place Adam Werth, 12th place Sammy Smith

100 Fly: 7th place Stewart Black, 8th place Reid Schroeder, 12th place Thomas Bellanger

100 Free: 1st place Garrett Accardo, 2nd place Mitchell Gillem, 6th place Jeffery Talbot, 14th place Sammy Smith

500 Free: 1st place Will Cooper, 2nd William DeJean, 5th place William Kitto, 6th place Sean Melancon

200 Free Relay*: 1st place Garrett Accardo, Mitchell Gillem, Joseph Duncan, William DeJean

100 Back: 4th place Stewart Black, 5th place Jeffery Talbot, 8th place Adam Werth, 12th place George Scully

100 Breast: 2nd Joseph Duncan, 12th place William Bright
