Bears Capture 27th District Title Since 1990
Some would say “It was a night of firsts,” for the Catholic soccer program with their district matchup versus Denham Springs being televised on WBTR. Others would say, “More of the same,” as the Bears captured its 27th district title since 1990.
The Bears fell behind early 1-0 on a Denham Springs free kick, but tied it on a Garrett Gamble goal in the 23rd minute. The goal by Gamble broke Denham’s 10 consecutive match shutout streak. “The kids were not concerned about streaks or Denham’s shutout success rate,” said Sanders Davis, CHS director of soccer. “Our guys were focused on continuing to play Catholic High soccer – great effort, attention to detail and physical play.”
Those three tenets rang true for the Bears in the second half as Cole Cazenave, a recent All-State selection in football, found the net for a 2-1 lead shortly after intermission. Cazenave scored the death knell in extra time to ensure the Bears’ 27th district title in 30 seasons.
The victory moved the Bears to 12-3-3 on the season with a 5-0 finish in District 3, Division I. CHS came into the game seventh in the latest LHSAA power ratings for Division I. The playoff pairings will be released on Wednesday and the Bears should have a first round bye.
“Now the focus is to sharpen up for the post-season, continue to build strength in the weight room and keep fresh legs,” said Davis. “We will turn our attention to the second round at the appropriate time. One game at a time.” Stay tuned to www.lhsaa.org on Wednesday, Jan. 30, for the Division I bracket release.
