Bears Defeat St. Amant 51-14 in District Match Up

The gridiron Bears traveled to St. Amant to face the Gators in a 5-5A clash on Friday, October 23.  The hosts were stunned at “The Pit” as the Bears raced out to a 37-7 halftime lead, poured it on in the third quarter and emptied the bench to defeat the Gators, 51-14.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSE:
Clyde Edwards-Helaire lined up at RB, at WR, and moonlighted as a QB on Friday night.  The junior RB amassed over 300, all-purpose yards running, receiving, passing and returning versus the Gators.

DEFENSE:
Senior cornerback Connor Bowen provided great coverage against the pass happy Gators.  An all-district defensive back as a junior, Bowen gives a consistent and polished effort every Friday for CHS and helped limit St. Amant to 151 yards passing.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Sophomore cornerback Patrick Mensah provided the Bears with good field position on the game’s opening play with a 31 yard return.  Mensah also had a solo tackle on kickoff coverage and blocked well on punt returns.

Quarterback Ian Brian accounted for three touchdowns, passing for two – Lance Chaisson and Ben Miles were the recipients – and racing 59 yards for a score on the ground.  Senior linebacker Denver Denison won the “Hit Man” Award for his great open field tackle on Friday and also added an interception to his resume. Junior kicker Parker Fontenot got the Bears on the board early with a 26-yard field goal on the game’s opening drive.

DUTCHTOWN

The Griffins come to Olympia Stadium on Friday, October 30 with a share of the District 5-5A championship on the line.  The Griffins sport a 6-2 overall record and are 3-0 in 5-5A.  The Griffins are coming off of a 24-24 victory over East Ascension last week.  Dutchtown opened league play with wins over Broadmoor and McKinley. The Griffins opened the season with a loss to 3A power Lutcher by one point, 19-20, and suffered their other defeat in week five to 5A power Zachary, 34-44. Head coach Benny Saia is the only coach that Dutchtown has had in school history. Saia is 101-46 at Dutchtown and 146-90 overall as a head coach. The Griffins return five starters on each side of the ball and are led by college recruits Coney Durr and Rickey Thomas in the secondary.  Quarterback Jared Sparks leads the offense.
