Bear Nation pulled into Zachary to face the 6th ranked Broncos last Friday night, and they were not disappointed. The Bears beat the Broncos in a very physical matchup, 24-14.
The Bears' offense rammed forward for 245 yards and limited their counterparts to just 59 yards on the ground. Senior running backs Beau Griffon and Parker Smith, both pounded away at ZHS for 58 yards apiece. Quarterback Cameron Dartez rushed for 101 yards. The junior signal caller also threw for 139 yards and earned Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Bears' defensive front smothered the Zachary running game and was led by the senior linebacker corps of Andrew Gauthier, Jack Ducote and Kael Howard. Gauthier was named Defensive Player of the Week with eight tackles - one for a loss. He also had a tackle on punt coverage. Ducote recovered a fumble and picked up six stops. Jonathan Mestayer had an interception for the Bears.
Senior punter Blake Davis averaged 43 yards per punt, to earn his second consecutive Special Teams Player of the Week award. Preston Stafford drilled a 40 yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Bears are now ranked 7th in Class 5A after starting the season with a 2-0 record. They will make the short drive to face University High on Friday, September 15, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Cubs are the #3 ranked team in Class 3A, and are a perennial power in their classification.
Bear fans are encouraged to arrive early for the game as a standing room only crowd is anticipated.
