Bears Win Thriller Over U-High
In the Battle for Baton Rouge, it took all 48 minutes for the CHS football team to gut out a 30-25 road win over neighboring U-High. A Connor Stewart interception in the waning seconds capped off a game full of huge plays and an exciting Friday night.
The Bears weathered the storm early as U-High scored on a 56-yard pass followed by a successful onside kick. Down 13-3 late in the first half, quarterback Jackson Thomas orchestrated two second quarter touchdown drives culminating in a strike to receiver Solomon Singleton with just 11 seconds remaining in the half to take a 17-13 halftime lead. Thomas finished the game 14 of 26 passing for 123 yards and two total touchdowns.
After a scoreless third quarter, the action furiously picked up in the final period. The Cubs began the fourth quarter with an impressive touchdown drive to take a 19-17 lead. But, CHS answered with a score of their own courtesy of senior running back Josh Parker on a 12-yard scamper. Parker led the Bears with 104 yards rushing on 18 carries. On the ensuing possession, it was the defense’s turn to make a big play. On a third and long, CHS sophomore cornerback Joshua Wax intercepted a pass and returned it all the way to the Cubs’ 19 yard line. On the first play following the turnover, junior George Hart completed a halfback pass to receiver Sam Ethridge in the back of the end zone to put the Bears ahead for good.
“I couldn’t be happier for our kids. They laid it all on the field tonight,” said head coach Gabe Fertitta. “This is a great rivalry for two exceptional schools. The atmosphere was something to remember.”
The Bears are now 3-0 on the season and will host Edna Karr (New Orleans) next Friday night at Memorial Stadium
