Brother Cosmas Cazayoux, SC ’45 Scholarship Established

The Brother Cosmas Cazayoux, SC ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship has recently been established by Dr. and Mrs. Francis T. Cazayoux ’48 to honor his older brother whose life was cut short by a heart attack at thirty-nine years of age. Twenty of his thirty-nine years were spent as a Brother of the Sacred Heart.

Brother Cosmas was principal at Menard Memorial High School in Alexandria from 1964 through 1967. He was known as a very talented teacher, as well as an excellent coach and athletic director. He touched the lives of the many people he served, so much so that the fieldhouse at Holy Savior Menard Central High School was named in his memory. Brother Cosmas was inducted into the CHS Hall of Fame posthumously in 1968. There will be more about the Brother Cosmas Cazayoux, SC ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the March edition of Bear Facts.

This scholarship, so generously started by Dr. and Mrs. Cazayoux, was fully funded from ‘tax free’ donations made possible through the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which enables donors who are 70 1/2 or older to make gifts to charities using funds transferred directly from their IRA’s. Individuals taking advantage of this will not have to pay taxes on the amount of the funds transferred. Any amount up to $100,000 can be donated as long as it is done before December 31, 2007.

If you are interested in establishing an endowed scholarship, you may contact CHS Director of Development, Hal Dupuy ’73, at 389-0978 or hdupuy@catholichigh.org.
