Brothers of the Sacred Heart Affected by Haiti Earthquake
On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Haiti was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake. Affected in the earthquake was The Haitian Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. There are currently 58 Brothers in this province. Although the Brothersí´ lives were spared, many of their teachers, students and schools were not as fortunate.
íÍWe thank you for your Solidarity. All the Brothers in Haiti are alive. Canado and St. Jean (two schools- one a high school and the other an elementary school) near each other in the heart of Port-au-Prince, collapsed with their principals under the debris. But God saved them,íñ commented Brother Nelson Augustin, the Provincial Secretary in Haiti.
The Brothers in Haiti have:
- Five schools in Port-au-Prince: Collge Canado-Haäó¢tien, Canado-Haitien Technical School, ¨Ícole Saint-Jean-lí´¨Ívang_liste, Collge Frre-¨Ínel-Cl_rism_ and John XXIII. The latter is a no-tuition school in an impoverished neighborhood. All of these schools collapsed.
- Schools in three towns away from the capital: Les Cayes, Miragoane and Port-Salut.
- Two communities of novices and student Brothers, in different sectors of Port-au-Prince: Thor and Pacot.
íÍThe Brothers throughout the world overwhelmed us with their generosity to the New Orleans Province in the wake of Hurricane Katrina because of the significant damage we faced at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis and Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. The Brothers and their students in Haiti are now much worse off than we can even imagine. Now it is our turn,íñ stated Catholic High Principal Brother Barry Landry, SC.
As part of Catholic Highí´s response to the Brothers in Haiti, we have begun collecting donations from students in religion classes. CHS will match all donations contributed by our students.
Anyone else wishing to donate to the Brothers in Haiti may send cash or check to Catholic High School or click here to donate online.
Checks should be made payable to: Brothers of the Sacred Heart, with Haiti Relief in the Memo Line.
Mail donations to: Catholic High School

Catholic High will direct all donations to the New Orleans Province Office. The New Orleans Province will then direct donations to the proper entity at the direction of the Superior General in Rome and in cooperation with the Provincial of Canada (the mother Province of Haiti). In this way, we will make sure every dollar gets to those in need.
The Brothers of the Sacred Heart Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. Therefore, contributions to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Foundation for Haitian relief are considered tax deductible under IRS rules. Note that Congress has passed and President Obama has signed legislation allowing taxpayers to deduct their contributions toward Haiti relief on their 2009 tax returns (rather than waiting to claim them on the 2010 returns). Only cash contributions made after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, to charities that provide Haiti earthquake relief are eligible for the 2009 deductions. Federal law requires that taxpayers keep a record of any deductible donations they make. Taxpayers should keep a bank record, such as a canceled check, or a receipt from the charity showing the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution.
