Catholic High School Named National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized Catholic High School as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence for 2020. This is the sixth time that Catholic High School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category. The school is the only school in the nation to receive this honor six times.
Catholic High School previously received the award in 1989, 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2014.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the National Blue Ribbon status recognizes public and private schools across the country that are among the highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. This award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Each year, only 50 private schools in the United States receive the award.
The U.S. Secretary of Education invites a school to submit an application for possible recognition when certain academic standards are met. In order to be eligible, the graduating class had to fall within the top 15% of ACT scores across the nation, a bar that was met by the CHS Class of 2019. Catholic High School administrators submitted the lengthy, rigorous application in the fall of 2019 and were recently notified of the school’s selection.
“This recognition demonstrates the consistent pursuit of excellence by the Catholic High students, faculty and staff, to never rest on our past accomplishments, but to always strive to adapt our educational program to meet the changing needs of our students and the different circumstances in our world,” Principal Lisa Harvey said. “It is important to demonstrate and celebrate that our students continue to achieve and succeed academically here at Catholic High School.”
Catholic High School will celebrate this accomplishment formally when it opens its new Student Center in mid-October. Photographs and brief descriptions of the 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools are available at https://www.ed.gov/nationalblueribbonschools.
