CHS Baseball Back In Action
Coach Brad Bass’ fifth edition of Bear baseball kicks off this weekend at the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Jamboree in New Orleans. On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Bears will play E.D. White at 1:00 p.m., followed by a rematch of last year’s semifinal opponent, Brother Martin at 2:30 p.m. Both games are set for three innings, and will be hosted by Brother Martin.
Bass returns last year’s leading hitter and LSU signee Josh Smith at shortstop, along with LSU-Eunice signee Brian Fairbanks on the mound and at third base. CHS Junior Cole Johnson is back behind the plate for the Bears. Other returning starters are senior outfielder Connor Bowen and senior designated hitter/first baseman Brandon Fairbanks. Fairbanks hit the walk-off double in the Bears’ 1-0 semifinal win last year.
New starters for the Bears are outfielder Tristan Welch, junior outfielder/infielder Peyton Alexander, sophomore second baseman Jordan Werner and senior pitchers Brady Sartain and Martin Morris. Junior hurler Sam Prescott will be part of the starting rotation. Junior Parker Evans will see starting time at first base/designated hitter and on the mound as well. Senior Daniel Guilbeau will receive starts in the outfield.
The 2015 team advanced to the 5A state championship game, and set a school record with 37 wins in a single season.
