CHS Basketball Honors Seniors And Defeats McKinley
The basketball team used Senior Night and Silent Night as momentum to defeat the McKinley Panthers at home on Friday, Feb. 19, 48-40. McKinley entered the game with a 9-0 district record and had already clinched the 5-5A title. The Bears got after the Panthers early, building a 27-17 lead at half. Despite falling behind 36-32 in the third quarter, the Bears charged back. Behind a rowdy home crowd, the Bears blistered McKinley 16-4 in the fourth period to come out on top 48-40.
Toliver Freeman was the leading scorer with 18 points. Ethan Treigle scored nine, DeMarcus Shepherd poured in eight, John Ward had seven, and Grant Sceroler tallied six for CHS.
The Bears finished 19-11 overall and 4-6 in district play.
CHS coach Mark Cascio was pleased with his team’s upset victory, “What a great way to finish the regular season, beating the district champs in front of our home crowd on Senior Night. I could not be more proud of our guys.”
The Bears are currently #18 in the unofficial LHSAA power ratings and would play #15 New Iberia on the road if those projections hold true. New Iberia completed the regular season with a 22-9 overall record and a mark of 11-1. Tipoff for Friday’s game would be at 7pm.
