The Bears open the 2017-2018 season on the road tonight at area Baton Rouge foe Tara with tipoff set for 7 p.m. The Bears enter the fifth year of the Mark Cascio era at Catholic High and are coming off a 19-14 season in which they knocked off Holy Cross in the first round of the playoffs before bowing out to eventual Division I state champion Scotlandville.
Five seniors will lead this year's edition on the court for CHS - Hunter Williams, Jack Judice, Max Johnston, Bailey Luckett and Mason McCullough. Ryan Michelet returns for his final season as student manager for Cascio.
"Opening night is always an exciting time," said Cascio. "We had a great off-season and our preparation in practice, scrimmages and the jamboree have been really good. Our guys cannot wait to start the season against neighborhood rival Tara."
The 9th grade will get things underway at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow at 6 p.m. before the varsity takes the floor.
The Bears' home opener will be Thursday night at the Bear Cave in the Catholic High gym. The 5/6/7 p.m. game time starts will be followed against visiting Mandeville of Class 5A. "It will be a big advantage for us getting to host Mandeville," added Cascio. "Their home setting, the Deep Blue Sea, works to their advantage and provides a great high school atmosphere. We are hoping to match that on Thursday and get Bear Nation out in full force."
