CHS COVID-19 Updates

Due to the Coronavirus, Catholic High School is following the protocol recommended by the Governor for public schools and the protocol recommended by the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Therefore, Catholic High School is suspending classes on campus and moving to a distance learning platform beginning Monday, March 16. Catholic High School will resume classes on campus on Tuesday, April 14. Please note that our Easter break was originally scheduled for Friday, April 10 through Friday, April 17. Catholic High will now have Easter break from Monday, April 6 through Monday, April 13. Distance learning instruction will not take place during this break. In addition, March 23 was originally scheduled as a faculty retreat day with no school for students. March 23 will now be a day of Distance Learning.

In anticipation of such a situation, the administration of Catholic High School has spent a considerable amount of time over the past two weeks creating a distance learning plan that ensures our students receive instruction that is both meaningful and rigorous. This plan will allow students to continue with their education until we all return to campus together.

On Monday, March 16, all faculty and staff will report to Catholic High for a full day of professional development on the distance learning plan. Teachers will spend Tuesday planning their instruction. Distance learning education for all students will begin on Wednesday, March 18, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Students and parents must be ready on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. to begin school work.

I want to assure both parents and students that this distance learning plan is one that all students will be able to manage successfully. Our teachers will work with all students to ensure their success and maintain the personal attention that students experience on campus. While students will be held accountable for the instruction and assessments, everyone at CHS understands that this new platform will require some adjustments and flexibility on the part of everyone. Nevertheless, I firmly believe it will be successful. Detailed information will be communicated to students about procedures for beginning instruction on Wednesday, March 18 at 8:00 a.m. We will communicate that detailed plan by 12 noon on Tuesday, March 17. Please check your school email frequently.

The campus will be open Monday and Tuesday for students to get any needed materials or items. Please check-in at the Main Office. While classes are suspended on site at CHS, the campus will remain open. Administrators, office support staff, Advancement and Finance offices will be on site from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. each day. The Help Desk will be open each workday from 8:00 – 12:00 for any student who needs technology assistance. Locations around campus can be available as needed for students who need internet access or who would prefer to work at school. Students can also visit campus for individual needs, including meeting in person during a scheduled time with a teacher or school counselor.

During the suspension of classes on campus, all school events, including athletic practices and competitions are either cancelled or postponed. Please check the school calendar for details. Individual coaches and club moderators will communicate individually if needed.

I appreciate the cooperation and willingness on the part of our entire school community to work together to navigate through this unsettling and difficult time. I know that there are many students and parents who are anxious and worried about all of this change, as well as the uncertainty about the Coronavirus. Rest assured that Catholic High School will do everything possible to ensure that our students are cared for and nurtured just as if they are on our campus. Students and parents are welcomed and encouraged to utilize our administration or school counselors for concerns.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I also ask that we all continue to pray for a speedy conclusion to the impact of the Coronavirus and that God’s wisdom guides all of our government officials and health care workers as they lead us through this crisis.

Ametur Cor Jesu.
Loved be the heart of Jesus.

Update from 3.13.20 | 2:00 p.m.

This afternoon, Governor Edwards issued a proclamation closing all Louisiana K through 12 public schools until April 13, 2020, in an effort to curb the rapid spread of the Coronavirus.

Catholic High School understands and supports this action by government officials in the efforts to deal with this outbreak.

In advance of this announcement, Catholic High School developed a comprehensive plan for distance learning in preparation for such a situation. In consultation with other Catholic schools and the Office of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, we will finalize our decision about any interruption of on-campus instruction as soon as possible. We anticipate that information will be communicated to students and parents later this afternoon through email, social media, and our school website.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility in this unprecedented and rapidly changing situation.
