CHS Junior Connor Waits Receives “Saved by the Belt” Award
CHS junior Connor Waits was awarded the íÍSaved by the Beltíñ award from Louisiana State Police, the Baton Rouge Police Department and the Interim LSU Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014.
Waits was involved in a serious accident in June of this year. Like every day, Waits puts his seat belt on every time he gets into a car. His decision to put a seat belt on that day is a decision that saved his life. Waits walked away from the accident uninjured.
íÍI am very proud that Connor has been chosen to receive this award and feel blessed that he sustained minor injuries in his accident as a result of wearing his seatbelt. This award is an excellent mechanism to promote teen driver safety and seatbelt use,íñ stated Waitsí´ mother Beth Sibley.
Last year, more than 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained. The purpose of the award is to increase public awareness, especially with young drivers, of the importance of seatbelt safety and avoiding other distractions like texting and cell phone use while driving.
