CHS Lacrosse Program Continues in Weekend Play
The Bears Lacrosse program returned to action this past Saturday, traveling to St. Thomas More in Lafayette for a day of action involving 15 teams. Over the course of the day, the CHS teams participated in six of the 15 games played on Saturday.
The day started off with the JVB squad playing St. Thomas More to a 5-5 tie. The Bears were led in scoring by Aston Richard, who had four goals. He was going by Holden David who had a goal and two assist. The defensive effort was lead by Brennan Pizzalato with three takeaways and three ground balls and Michael Browning, who had two takeaways, four ground-balls and an assist.
Next up was the JV squad playing St. Thomas More. This was a tight game throughout, with the Bears giving up a score with 30 seconds to go, falling to the Cougars 5-4. The Bears were led in scoring by Matthew Berdon with two goals and an assist. Also helping with scoring was Clayton Rives with a goal and Ray Nebel with a goal and an assist.
The third game of the day pitted the varsity Bears against the STM Cougars. This was an emotional match, as the Bears head coach, Tyler Gray, was previously the coach at STM. The Bears started off strong, building a 5-1 lead. However, they couldn’t hold it with some second half struggles and having the game end in a 5-5 tie. The goals were scored by five different players, with Andrew Young with a goal, Peter Sclafani with his first varsity goal, Justin David with a goal and an assist, Tres Hawkins with a goal and Matthew Berdon with his first varsity goal.
Later, the varsity played the Byrd Yellow Jackets, who traveled down from Shreveport for the day. This was an exciting game with a lot of action. The game closed in a 4-4 tie. The Bears were led by Andrew Young’s 3 goals. He was joined by Tres Hawkins with a goal. Justin David had an assist in the game.
In the JV squadí´s last game of the day, they went up against the Byrd JV and took control early and never trailed. The Bears scored the programs first victory of the day with a dominating 5-1 win. The Bears were led by Matthew Berdon’s two goals and an assist. He was joined in scoring by Josh Brooks with a goal, Clayton Rives with a goal and an assist, and Christopher Miller with a goal and two assist.
The varsity closed out the day with a night game under the lights with the temperatures dropping against the Lafayette Hurricanes. After a 3-2 lead at half and with the Hurricanes tying the game late in the second half, the Bears were able to get two scores and close out a 6-4 win over the Hurricanes. They were led in scoring by Tres Hawkins with two goals and an assist. He was joined by Ben Noto, Andrew Young, Justin David and Jon Adam Town, each with a goal. Additionally, Justin David, Christopher Miller and Jack Godbery had assist.
The JV (10 a.m. start) and Varsity (noon start) return to action next weekend against the Mandeville Skippers at Olympia Stadium. Come out and support the Bears!
