CHS Lacrosse Team Advances To Quarterfinals
Advancing in the playoffs has become second nature for Catholic High athletic teams. The lacrosse team lived up to that standard on Sunday afternoon, as the Bears defeated Dutchtown 15-6 in first round playoff action. Freshman William Conger made a statement against the Griffins, winning 11 of 17 face-offs which helped set up leading Bear goal scorers Reed Fontenot (5 goals on 9 shots) and Holden Farmer (3 goals on 6 shots). Carter Dicharry and Topher Rives each scored two goals to solidify the CHS attacking offense. The Bears were equally aggressive on defense, harassing Dutchtown and limiting the opponent to just six goals and limited shot opportunities. Junior keeper Hayden Toups was solid in goal with seven saves.
Second year head coach George Hopkins commented on his team’s chances moving forward. “We have a very solid goalie in Hayden Toups and there are some great athletes and lacrosse players supporting him on defense. Our offense really clicked in our win over Dutchtown, and we will need to work that same mojo Friday night to knock off the Cougars.”
The state quarterfinals will be held at Cougar Stadium in Lafayette on Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. The winner of Friday’s match will be the West bracket champion and advance to face the North bracket champion next weekend at a site and time to be determined.
