CHS Mourns the Loss of CHS Teacher Greg Sollie

Catholic High School is mourning the loss of long time teacher and friend, Greg Sollie. God called Sollie home suddenly Thursday, January 22. The loss of this incredible man has had an enormous impact on the Catholic High School community.

Sollie taught physics at CHS for the past 18 years. He was the Science Department chairperson, Robotics Club moderator, Science Club moderator, Astronomy Club moderator and oversaw all landscaping on campus. One project that Sollie felt very passionate about was working with the Habitat for Humanity builds. Catholic High has recently sponsored a Habitat build for a local family. When it was time for construction, Sollie was always the first person on site and the last to leave.

The memory of Greg Sollie was honored this morning as a group of students organized a prayer service before school. CHS also held a school-wide prayer service lead by Father Michael Alello í´98. Former students of Sollie also attended to remember their beloved physics teacher.

“How do you express words for someone that leaves you speechless? I only had Mr. Sollie for a few weeks, but he found a way to excite me about school. He found a way to make an impossible subject entertaining and enjoyable, while he lived his life as an example for all with the humility that everyone should strive for,íñ said Ryan McGovern í´15.

Today, students honor Sollie by sharing stories of íÍSollieisms.íñ He will be greatly remembered for his teaching mannerisms and his humor in the classroom.

íÍRight now Ií´m not sure the void left in my heart or this campus can be filled. Greg was a force, a presence wherever he was, and not just because of his size. His personality and heart were the biggest parts of him. He was never very good at hiding the heart part; everyone knew he was just a big teddy bear beneath that gruff exterior. His level of concern for his students and colleagues, his love of his subject, for teaching, and Catholic High are what we all aspire to. He spoke often about waking up to go have fun, not go to work. He was a great friend and colleague, much loved and sorely missed,íñ commented CHS Faculty member Vic Caffarel.

Funeral arrangements for Greg Sollie have been set for Tuesday, January 27 in the Catholic High School Gym.  Visitation will be held 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. and services will begin at 6 p.m. with Brother Ray Hebert, SC presiding.  A reception will follow in the CHS Union.

Parking will be available in the Westmoreland parking lot and security will be provided.

íÍHave a dayíñ í Greg Sollie
