CHS Senior Mason Maurer Takes It All In Prestigious Tournament
Catholic High senior Mason Maurer, headed to Grand Isle the last weekend of July to catch some rays, hang out with friends and fish in the oldest fishing tournament in the United States. What he did not expect was to walk away from the three-day tournament with the Best All-Around Angler Award.
Maurer placed first in the Jack Crevalle Division, with a haul of 26 lbs. 10 oz. He landed a 24 lb. 2 oz. catch to finish second in the Barracuda Division. The Port Allen native topped everything off with a third place finish in the Spadefish Division, with a 3 lb. 8 oz. catch.
Maurer, also a pitcher on the CHS baseball team, expects to defend his title next July at what will be the 90th edition of the International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo. Fellow senior Blake Miller was Maurer’s wingman, assisting his classmate in hauling in the prized catches.
Maurer is one of the youngest winners of the Best All-Around Angler Award.
