CHS Soccer, Bears or Bruins?
When first time CHS soccer fans look at the scoreboard on Wednesday night, it may be a little confusing. Who do you pull for – the Bears or Bruins? The CHS soccer faithful will be pulling for more goals on the side of the Bears on the scoreboard. The CHS Bears will take on the Bonnabel Bruins on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in regional-round playoff action at Pete Boudreaux Field at Catholic High School. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Bears had a bye in the first-round of the LHSAA Division I playoffs, while the Bruins traveled to Shreveport and upset the ninth seed C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets on penalty kicks. After a 1-1 tie in regulation and two overtime periods, Bonnabel outscored Byrd on penalty kicks, 9-8. Bonnabel comes into the playoff game against Catholic with a record of 12-9-5. Key wins for the Bruins came against Archbishop Rummel (4-0) and Baton Rouge High (2-0). Close losses included: Holy Cross (0-1); Brother Martin (1-3); East Ascension (0-1) and Barbe (1-3). The Bruins tied Slidell, Hammond and Vandebilt Catholic. The Bruins play in District 7 of Division I.
Catholic comes into Wednesday’s match with a record of 12-4-3. The Bears’ four losses come at the hands of Division I powers St Paul’s (two losses) and Jesuit. Division III power E.D. White was the other loss suffered by CHS. The Bears swept through District 3 competition, going 5-0 and outscoring its opponents 26-2. Signature wins for the Bears came against Acadiana, Vandebilt Catholic, Denham Springs, Northshore, Baton Rouge High, and Dutchtown. Catholic is battle-tested coming in, having been tested by St. Paul’s, Jesuit, Northshore, Denham and Ducthtown.
The winner of the match will move on to the quarterfinals and face the winner of St. Paul’s and Mandeville on a date and time to be determined.
