CHS Soccer Team Opens Season With Win Against Northshore
The Catholic High Soccer team kicked off its season with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Northshore High Panthers of Slidell. The Bears were ranked number seven in the pre-season poll, while Northshore entered as the number nine ranked team in Division I.
The teams entered intermission at 0-0, but the Bears came out smoking in the second half with a goal at the 44 minute mark by senior Bobby Lee. Lee’s score was set up by a counter attack from senior Nicholas Davies and Michael Focht. The Bears held off Northshore with solid defensive play led by keeper Will Whitehead. Whitehead accounted for six saves on the night and picked up his first shutout of the young season. Goal number two was scored by Davies on a well-executed set piece from sophomore Eli Weathers and senior Matt Morales.
The opening season win was the first for new coach Josh McReynolds. McReynolds, a three-year assistant in the CHS program, is a veteran of the Baton Rouge Soccer Association.
The Bears will attempt to improve its record to 2-0 against 5A Central Lafourche in the St. Amant Tournament. The tourney will begin in Gonzales at Tee Joe Park with “kickoff” set for 6 p.m. on Thursday.
