CHS Track and Field Shows Up Strong at Region 2 Meet

The Bears came out with guns blazing to start the Class 5A, Region 2 meet on Thursday, April 28, held at Catholic High.  The field athletes captured five of the seven field events in the afternoon to set the table for the track athletes to deliver the knockout punch to the opposition later in the evening.  The Bears finished with 164 points, far ahead of second place finisher Scotlandville.  Fontainebleau placed third with 49 points, while district rivals Dutchtown, 46 points and St. Amant, 35 points, rounded out the top five.

Nigel Despinasse was named Outstanding Field Performer for his wins in the shot put and discus.  Jace Attuso continued his winning ways in the long jump, setting a stadium record in the process.  Alex Bertrand won the javelin and fellow senior Chandler Kelleher pole vaulted his way to a victory in his event.  Also qualifying in the field were London Lewis (3rd in the discus); Zach Tom (2nd in the shot put); and Jace Attuso (3rd in the triple jump).

Seth Hollier led the way for the Bears on the track as he was named Outstanding Track Performer.  Hollier won the 200 meters and was a member of the winning relay teams in the 4×200 and 4×400.  Kam Cummings was victorious in the 100 meter hurdles and logged a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.  Qualifying for the state meet on the track were David Toups (3rd in the 1600); Vernon Langley (3rd in the 110 hurdles); Jeffrey Kelley (2nd in the 3200); Patrick Stephens (3rd in the 400).

While the honor of Outstanding Field Performer was nice, Nigel Despinasse noted, “It was about us qualifying as many team members as possible to the state meet.  Our goal is to win state next week.”  The 5A state track and field championship will be held Saturday afternoon on May 7 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.
