CHS Track and Field Team Finishes Season Sixth at State Meet
The 2018 track and field season came to an end on Saturday, May 5, at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of LSU. The Bears finished tied for 6th from among over 50 schools that participated in the Class 5A state championship meet. Catholic came away with 24 points, but was set back by an injury to one of its top point men in senior sprinter Sethan Hollier. A healthy Hollier would have put the Bears in contention for another state championship.
Parker Smith put the Bears on the scoreboard early with a 5th in the shot put. Smith put up a personal best 52-1 in the shot put, less than two feet from the top mark. Smith was a first year shot putter that made major advancements in the event and was the top field man for CHS in 2018.
The 4×200 relay team pointed for CHS with a 5th place finish in 1:28.35. Members of the 800 meter relay squad were Braelen Morgan, Ebenezer Aggrey, D.J. Butler and Vernon Langley. Collin Hedges ran a blistering 4:22 to finish 5th for the Bears. Hedges was the top distance runner for the Bears on the track this season.
One of the best and most consistent performers of the season for the Bears was D.J. Butler in the 400 meters. Butler repeatedly ran the quarter mile in the 48 second neighborhood and clocked a 47.95 in the 400 at the state meet.
In the final event of the 2018 Louisiana track and field season, the Bears captured a state title in the 4×400 relay. Lucas DiResto, Tyler Jackson, Ebenezer Aggrey and D.J. Butler became state champs with a 3:18.58 clocking in the toughest relay race on the docket.
