CHS Wrestling Welcomes Winter
With the fall sports season wrapping up this weekend, the athletic focus will turn to the winter sports season at Catholic High. Wrestling is one of those winter sports and coach Tommy Prochaska’s program has been a pillar of excellence in Louisiana during his tenure over the last two decades. The Bears are off to a 4-4 start on the young season and three of its losses have come by a combined eight points.
The Bears are coming off of last weekend’s Catholic High Duals, one of the top early meets of the prep wrestling season. The Bears defeated Hahnville (46-30), Brusly (49-19), and East Ascension (43-27). They dropped a close match to perennial state power Jesuit, 39-34. In the final match of the evening, Prochaska worked on improving team depth by giving inexperienced and younger wrestlers the opportunity to compete against St. Amant.
Catholic returns two experienced wrestlers in Hunter Goodson, 9-4 on the season, and Luke Romano, 10-3 this year. A.J. Sabine returns and has notched a 15-3 mark in 2018. Toby Richard has competed this well for the Bears, reflected by his 14-6 record. Peter Kelly returns to the team after a successful run with the Big Orange Wave in cross country. MacCullen Mire (8-3), Ian Wyble (10-2), Adam Callicott (11-6), Tyler Toussant (9-4), and Martin Helouin (8-5) are also familiar staples on the wrestling roster this season.
The Bears will return to the mat tonight versus state power St. Paul’s. Things kicks off at 6:00pm in the Catholic High gym. Come on out to campus to see two of the most storied programs in the state duke it out in prep grappling action.
