Fast and furious are two words that aptly describe the Catholic soccer effort in its 4-0 playoff win over Bonnabel on Tuesday night.
The Bears were on the attack from the first touch until the final whistle, building a 2-0 halftime lead courtesy of goals by Cole Cazenave (8th minute) and Ben Katzenmeyer (22nd minute). Cazenave’s shot from inside ten yards found the back of the net and had another goal negated shortly after by an offsides call. Katzenmeyer struck gold from thirty-five yards out on a blast that eluded Bonnabel defenders and the keeper. CHS played the match on the Bruin’s side of midfield for the vast majority of the night, launching a barrage of shots that just missed entering the crease. The Bears outshot the Bruins by a twenty to two margin and pressured the opponent for all eighty minutes of the match. Garrett Gamble scored two goals in the second half, just minutes apart and his try for a hat trick missed by mere inches.
“The only focus for our guys coming in was on us, on our game. The opponent is faceless to us. Our objective was to make Bonnabel uncomfortable from the opening touch and I believe we did”, said Director of Soccer Sanders Davis. When asked about strategy for its upcoming quarterfinal match, Davis commented, “Of course, there are some things that we can clean up for our next game, but it was great to advance in the playoffs with an opportunity to play whoever is on the other side of the field next match.”
The Bears will go to work on the practice field and prepare for its next match in the Division I quarterfinals. The Bears will be traveling to St. Paul’s on Tuesday to play in the third round playoff contest, which starts at 7:00 PM.
