Father Trey Nelson ’80 to be Inducted into CHS Hall of Fame

Father Trey Nelson will be inducted into the Catholic High School Hall of Fame December 6 at 7:15 p.m. at the 23rd Annual Founders Banquet at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center.

Father Trey, a 1980 graduate of Catholic High School, is a priest of the diocese of Baton Rouge. He graduated in 1984 with a degree in Communications from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. In 1988, he earned a Master of Theology from the Notre Dame Seminary Graduate School of Theology and became ordained by Bishop Stanley Ott.

During his 19 years as priest, Father Trey has served as associate pastor of St. Isidore, St. Jude and Most Blessed Sacrament parishes; chaplain of St. Michael the Archangel High School and Catholic High School; spiritual director of the Office of Youth Ministry; facilitator of the Diocesan Council for Youth Ministry Development; and a member of the Diocesan Committee for Child Protection. Father Trey currently serves as pastor of St. Anne and Assumption Parishes (in Napoleonville and Plattenville), where he has been for the past 10 years, St. Philomena Parish (in Labadieville) and assists the Catholic High School Campus Ministry Team.

In addition to his priestly duties, Father Trey has authored several books including ‘Stand on the Promise: Daily Prayers for Busy Teens,’ ‘To Be a Pilgrim Companion: Roles and Boundaries in Youth Ministry,’ ‘8 Qualities for Healthy, Holy Relationships in Ministry with Minors,’ ‘From Padre’s Kitchen: More Recipes and Tales from the Bayou’ and ‘I Just Claim to Love the Game: Where Golf and Life Converge’ (2004, Author House Publishing; Bloomington, Indiana).

Father Trey has devoted numerous hours to Catholic High School throughout the years. He has directed faculty and staff retreats, celebrated liturgies and participated in student retreats. He has also provides spiritual assistance to school personnel.

He is a valued and loved leader of his parishes and is appreciated for his leadership, courage, example of Gospel values and concern for others.

Father Trey, the oldest of seven children, is the son of Yvonne Nelson and the late Caye Nelson Jr. and is an uncle to 14 nieces and nephews. His is a survivor of esophageal cancer.

The Catholic High School Hall of Fame honors those men and women whose commitment and dedication to Catholic High School have been exemplary and whose lives embody the ideals that CHS strives to instill in its students.
