Football Bears (7-0) To Take On St. Amant (7-0) In District Showdown

The #2 ranked Bears take on the #10 ranked St. Amant Gators in a district showdown between undefeated teams on Friday, Oct. 21. The Bears are coming off a 48-6 thrashing of Broadmoor, while the Gators dispatched their rivals, East Ascension, by a 54-6 score.  Both teams are 2-0 in 5-5A play.

The Gators, hit hard by historic floodwaters back in August, have overcome adversity in their climb to 7-0.  After opening the season with a 31-6 win over Live Oak (5-2), the Gators knocked off defending Class 3A state champion Lutcher, 36-34, in week three. The St. Amant offense has been prolific, averaging just over 46 points per game, to rank as one of the top scoring offenses in any classification.  The Gator defense has been just as stout, yielding only 12 points per contest.

Senior receiver/kicker Briggs Bourgeois is a player to watch, leading the team in receiving, punt returns and kicking.  Bourgeois is a USM commitment as a kicker and has converted five of his field goal attempts in 2016. Senior quarterback Hayden Mallory has thrown 22 touchdown passes against just 4 interceptions.  Mallory has completed 68 percent of his passes this season.

The Bears have a defense to match, giving up 13 points per game and forcing 14 turnovers. The Bears have held four teams that advanced to at least the state semifinals in 2015 to under 20 points a game. Sophomore safety Jonathan Mestayer leads the team with two interceptions. The defensive line of Aaron Moffitt, Tre Square, James Delee, Diego Carrera, Rock Schexnaydre and London Lewis have been dominant.

The CHS offense has averaged 34 points a game behind the direction of Zach Crawford. In his first year as the starting quarterback, Crawford has thrown for 13 touchdowns to counter 3 interceptions and is completing 62 percent of his passes. Clyde Edwards-Helaire has scored eight touchdowns to pace the Bears in the scoring department. Senior kicker Parker Fontenot is tied with the Bears’ LSU running back commitment for the team lead with 48 points.

Plan on arriving early to Olympia Stadium as an overflow crowd is expected. Kickoff in this clash of the titans is set for 7 p.m. If you can’t cheer the Bears on in person, catch all the action on BBN!
