Freshman Andy Mertz Earns Rank of Eagle Scout
CHS freshman Andy Mertz, earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 478 sponsored by Broadmoor United Methodist Church on July 27, 2015. Eagle is the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America; and it denotes service, leadership and character.
Of every 100 boys who join Scouting, only two will achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. To earn the rank, a Scout must progress through six lesser ranks, earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, serve in leadership positions with the troop and provide service to the community. In addition the Scout must plan, develop, and lead an Eagle service project approved by the Istrouma Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Mertzí´s project included benefitting the LSU Wildlife Hospital, Raptor Rehabilitation Facility. Mertz supervised 23 volunteers to build five raptor/songbird cages; three large (4í´ X 5íñ) and two small (2í´ X 4í´). Two members of the class of 2019, Lance Gaupp and Spencer Heitman, were among the volunteers helping with Mertzí´s project. Other volunteers included Troop/Crew 478 and LSU Veterinary Students. These cages provide a place for injured or abandoned birds to be nursed back to health prior to being released back into the wild.
