Lacrosse Bears Win District Championship

While it was a warm south Louisiana evening, there was a large partisan Bear crowd in the stands because it was Senior night and to watch the Bears take to the field against their Louisiana High School Lacrosse League Central District foe from Lafayette, the St. Thomas More Cougars.  The Bears came into the game with 5-2 LHSLL record and a 2-0 District mark.  Additionally, a victory by the Bears would allow them to claim the LHSLL Central District Championship.

The Bears came out tight, making multiple mistakes in the first part of the 1st qtr.  This allowed the Cougars to capitalize on one of the mistakes, by scoring the first goal of the night at the 10:54 of the 1st qtr.  The mistakes and goal caused a hush to fall over the  crowd.  However, the Bears eventually woke up and at the 2:11 mark of the 1st qtr, Tres Hawkins scored off of an assist by Justin David, knotting the score at 1-1, which brought life to the home field crowd.  The Bears scored again just 40 seconds later at the 1:31 mark, with David assisting Jon Adam Town this time, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead and they never trailed again.  The Bears scored again with just 9 seconds to go in the 1st qtr, with Hawkins scoring his second goal of the game off of another David assist.  At the end of the 1st qtr, the Bears led 3-1 and the crowd had gotten into the game bringing energy to the players.

The Bears continued the attack in the 2nd qtr.  At the 7:51 mark, in what could be considered one of the plays of the game, David was able to knock down a pass from the goalie, who was behind the goal and get the ball to Andrew Young, who scored in the empty goal, giving the Bears a 4-1 lead.  At the 5:50 mark, David joined in the scoring off of an assist from Christopher Miller, giving the Bears a 5-1 lead.  The Bears closed out their scoring in the 2nd qtr, when David scored his second goal off of an assist from Town, giving the Bears a 6-1 lead.  The Cougars were able to score at the 1:26 mark to make the score 6-2 and brought the game to halftime.

Another key moment of the game came at the 10:35 mark of the 3rd qtr.  The Bears received a 3 min non-releasable penalty.  During the dead ball period, Catholic Head Coach Tyler Gray asked for a stick check on one of the Cougar players.  The stick was rule illegal, giving the Cougars a 3 min non-releasable penalty, matching the Bears penalty and taking away the Cougars advantage.  The Bears opened the scoring in the 3rd qtr, when they scored 3 goals within a 2 minute period.  The first goal came at the 9:50 mark, when Young scored an unassisted goal, giving the Bears a 7-2 lead.  Next, at the 9:10 mark, Town scored an unassisted goal to make it 8-2 Bears.  Then at the 8:16 mark, Town scored, his third goal of the night for a hat trick, off of an assist from David and giving the Bears a 9-2 lead.  The Cougars didní´t give up, coming back with 4 un-answered goals and cutting the Bears lead to a 9-6 score to close out the 3rd qtr.

The finale Bears score came at the 9:09 mark of the 4th qtr, when Young scored his third goal of the night off of yet another David assist, giving the Bears a 10-6 lead.  The Cougars closed out the scoring with two goals in the qtr.  As time expired with the Bears up 10-8, the players rushed the field to celebrate their LHSLL Central District Championship.

This was the second District Championship in the programs 9 year history.  Winning District guarantees the Bears a playoff spot at the end of the season.  The LHSLL playoffs will start in mid April when the seedings are announced.  The playoffs conclude with Championship Weekend in Shreveport, LA the weekend of April 25th & 26th.

The Bears return to the field on Tuesday March 24th, when they host Northshore Lacrosse at 6:30pm, before heading out of state for games in Ridgeland, MS and Memphis, TN this weekend.
